The Trailer For Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy Has Arrived, And It Looks Awesomely Insane

There's a talking tree, a gun-happy raccoon, and Andy Dwyer has abs.

The much-anticipated trailer for Guardians Of The Galaxy just hit the web, and the film looks to live up to the expectations of comic nerds. It’s funny, quirky, action-packed, different to anything Marvel Studio has done before, and definitely their riskiest film to date.

Taking place in a fictional prison called Klyn — which, according to comments from director James Gunn, could potentially be the setting for a large portion of the film — the trailer’s opening pays obvious homage to Indiana Jones, which is perfect because fans are already comparing Chris Pratt’s “legendary outlaw” to another of Harrison Ford’s iconic characters. From there, we’re introduced to this “bunch of a-holes” by none other than John C. Reilly, who’s playing Rhomann Dey, one of the high-ranking officers with Nova Corps (an intergalactic police force).

The character list is one of Marvel’s most original. There’s Djimon Hounsou’s towering soldier Korath; a bulking green mass who’s not The Incredible Hulk but Drax the Destroyer, played by pro-wrestler Dave Bautista; Gamora, an alien assassin played by Avatar’s Zoe Saldana, who trades blue skin for green; Rocket, a raccoon who has an infatuation with guns and explosives; and finally, Groot, the tree-like being who can only say three words, “I am Groot” (unfortunately, we don’t get to hear either Bradley Cooper or Vin Diesel’s voice work just yet). But it’s Pratt’s Peter Quill, aka ‘Star Lord’, who’s the main focus here. He seems to have found the perfect balance between cocky action hero and hopeless fool. The Parks And Recreation star is barely recognisable having lost 50 pounds for the role, and replacing it with a whole bunch of abs.

The rest of the trailer plays out to the awesome backing of Blue Swede’s ‘Hooked On A Feeling’, a strange but fitting choice for the oddball humour expected. We only get quick glimpses of the remaining cast, including Karen Gillan as the metal-clad villain Nebula, and Benicio Del Toro’s The Collector, which is odd considering we already saw him at the end of Thor: The Dark World. Even more surprising is that there’s no sign of the rumoured lead villain Ronan, played by Lee Pace.

Still, it seems James Gunn has brought something truly unique to the Marvel roster, creating a futuristic universe that doesn’t take itself too seriously. With bright coloured, alien skin-tones and retro fashion, this feels like a nod to Dr. Who and the Golden Era of comics.

Guardians Of The Galaxy is due in cinemas on August 1. You might also have abs by then!
